Gas Tank Capacity

#1 Post by Rod R Youssefi »

I have a 1962 356 B which has a gas tank that holds around 5 gallons and a 1964 356 C which seems to have a greater tank capacity. I was surprised how much more it held last time I filled it up and wanted to see if there was a difference in the tank capacities between the years. I am not certain if they are original tanks or not.

Thanks,

Rod

HMM--Unless it is, or was a race car, the A/B tanks hold around 13 gallons--similar to the BT6/C tanks

Rod - as Dick says above, the tanks have a similar capacity although a radically different shape between the T5 and T6 models.
Actually, the 62 model year is a T6 body as well, with filler through the fender - is that what you have?
If it is only taking 5 gallons, something is not working right. Maybe the vent on the 62 is plugged up and throwing the gas pump auto turn-off dispensers - just a thought ....

The 62 will have a bottom sender tank if original. 13.2 gallon capacity.

OK great thank you. I believe my 64 holds the correct amount but I will need to troubleshoot the 62 to confirm it is holding the correct amount and if not will need to investigate further. Thanks again.

Rod, just post a picture of the tank and we will know the answer immediately I would think.

8.2 gallons of gold would be worth about $25 million so you should be thinking 550 Spyder (or 917).

Victor it is going to vary between 25 and 35 which is what I get between my Zenith carbureted cabrio and the Solex carbureted coupes with big bore engines. In general over the years I find steady freeway driving returns the best mileage and town driving or twisty country roads will really spoil the mileage. The accelerator pumps real destroy gas mileage as they dump a lot of gas down the throats on every gear shift. Your MPG may be better as you have a bigger gallon.
Remember when these cars were new the DIN standard at the time required cars to go 250 miles or 400Km on a tank of gas.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.
