63 b zero compression in cylinder 3

#1 Post by peter zedak »

hello -
my car has been diagnosed with the above issue by a
porsche mechanic (Fast Lane in Santa Cruz) whom i
trust in these matters. he, unfortunately, cannot take
this job on.
i have a few questions for the forum and will be grateful
for any input:

1. how much would such a repair cost? i know the answer
is subject to many variables but i'm looking for a ball park
figure.
2. i'm looking for a credentialed mechanic in the greater
San Francisco/San Jose/Monterey Bay area. i can have the car
towed 200 miles and i live in Aptos, just below Santa
Cruz. any suggestions?

the car starts and runs and outside of the (major) compression
issue has no problems.
thanks in advance for any and all help.
regards,
peter zedak

Peter was that a leak down test or just a compression check? A leak down would pinpoint the problem and enable a better diagnosis and cost estimate. It also does not sound right that the car runs "OK". With one cylinder at zero compression I would expect a significant drop in performance and the engine sound would be "off". Try another shop for a leak down test. Any good independent shop could do it especially a shop with some air cooled VW experience. Must be a few of them around Aptos.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

This list was originated by Steve Douglas some time back and has been updated by me and some others, I think:

Repair Shops in Northern California
I have gotten a great start to a list of shops that may have 356 experience. I want to thank those who contributed, more than 30 replied. I am hoping that this will be a continuously growing list with contributions from local members. This list only offers the contact information, no recommendations, criticism, or issues are considered. That is up to the individual to do research, find out what fits their needs. One must remember it’s not 1970 anymore, and we are driving obsolete cars, that require ancient procedures. No computer to tell what’s broken, knowledge is important with our cars, many have never had to learn the basics or have forgotten them dealing with modern cars.

That list is a wonderful resource Ron. I would probably have to cover a 5 state area to get a list that long.
