Ground strap

#1 Post by Vic Skirmants »

I just received the new Registry magazine for Sept-Oct. Nice article on pages 64-68 on the European heating system by Greg Bryan.
Page 67 shows the underside of a 356 with said system in place. One problem; the ground strap goes from the correct bolt on the transmission to the rear bolt of the right side trans mount. So the ground strap is grounding to the transmission, not the chassis! That ain't gonna work. Greg, I hope that's not your car.
In the old days, I would have written a letter to the editor, and waited two months for the correction.
Now I can get immediate satisfaction; if anybody pays attention.

Mike, What you mean by "Old Boy" in a British accent? -- None of us are getting any younger, you included!

BTW, the ground strap is the only direct connection to the body for the whole drivetrain. The starter is grounded to the trans. The generator and distributor are grounded to the engine case and then grounded thru the trans. Obviously, the strap and contact points on each end need to be clean and tight.

Vic - glad you liked the article!
No, not my car but I did not notice the misplaced ground strap.
Actually, I'm always amazed at the detail you can pick out of a picture ...
