rear bump stops

#1 Post by JamesCrawford »

My 64 C needs new rear suspension travel rubber bump stops. Somebody told me the axels have to come out to change them. If not what is the procedure?

Thanks,

Jim

Rubber bumpers are probably bad so cut 'em off to get to the large slotted-head screw. Vice grips are probably needed; forget trying to use a screwdriver in the slot. Note, the rubber bumpers and screws are different for A/B versus C.

The red wrench (torch) works the best. Heat it up cherry red, quench it, and it comes right off.

DON'T USE FIRE! Cut the rubber away use some Kroil for a week or so. then you should be able to use a pair of vice grips and a wrench to remove the holding fixture. You can clean the rust in Muratic acid, paint the parts and assemble with grease. The parking brake runs through the holder of the bump stop this does not need to be melted. You have to disconnect the parking brake to remove the bump stop which measr removing the caliper and the rotor. al zim

Referring to when the rubber is off and the bump stop bracket has been removed from the axle, Al....
I also find Evaporust to be a remarkable rust remover.
