Suggestions to sell project 1965 356 SC

I'm a newbie to this site, but a committed Porsche/VW aficionado/mechanic for over 40 years. It is time to give up the 1965 356 SC that I have had for 35 years, and I am looking for your recommendations on selling this project car.

I do not have a cardex or COA. Is it worth waiting the many weeks it would take to obtain either? From what I understand, the COA may not even list the engine #, so it seems like it may be a waste of time when the other numbers clearly match.

What are the best resources for cross-listing it to an auction? We plan to sell it on BAT.

What photographs are critical pieces for the serious buyer? We believe that we have thoroughly documented everything a buyer would want to see, but know that the tach differentiates an SC. Anything else that we may not have thought about?

Are there any concerns about individuals viewing the car during auction? What kind of scams should we look out for?

Any suggestions you have would be deeply appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Where to start? Since a numbers matching car is usually considered to be worth 15-20% more I would wait for Kardex. Several ways/places you can get them. COA has recently changed but i THINK PCNA will still tell you if engine number matches or not. More I am not sure of. Pictures showing how solid undercarriage is are necessary. Even if you have to trailer it to somewhere with a lift for pictures. Also does the motor turn over freely? Lots of high quality photos. Try Elevenparts.com for Kardex.

Thank you for the information, Doug. I contacted elevenparts.com, and we hope that they can confirm the engine matching the chassis. I will also contact PCNA. The motor has always turned over freely, so that is not an issue, and we have a friend with a lift who may be able to assist with additional photos. We appreciate your help!

BAT can be a rough crowd so don't expect to be treated gently if not advertised well. Many cars sold there go overseas.

I'm no Porsche sales person, but I have been in the vintage car restoration business for over 35 years. the first thing I would do is pull all that rotted carpet out so that a potential car buyer can see what he's buying. no one is going to pay the premium price that these car command by looking at rotted carpet photos.

If you can get it running, do it. It seems that there are two kinds of potential buyers, restorers and drivers and if you get it running it should have more appeal to people seeking a car they can drive and possibly fix up later. Good luck.

Where are you located? Needless to say you can advertise it here, and posted honestly shouldn't get any rude comments, and probably fewer scam attempts. As for scams, ask your bank what is safe, such as wire transfer. I know most any kind of check can bite back shortly after the car is picked up, be very careful. Adam should be able to tell you how to receive payment safely.

PCNA told me if you tell them the numbers and they match they will put it on the COA.

I just emailed PCNA's COA department last week and they confirmed the matching numbers (via email) on my '71 911T coupe so it appears they are doing this. I woulds think, based on the changes to COA's now issued, that they will confirm the numbers are matching if they are but will only say they aren't if the numbers don't match (without telling you what the engine / transmission number should be).

My two cents: if you plan to sell it with the "numbers matching" claim (which will bring more dollars) you have to offer proof, either the CofA, the Kardex or both.

Porsche auctions on Bring-a-Trailer are entertaining, to say the least, but knowledgeable people auction their cars there. Notably, the gentleman who runs Performance Oriented (911 carburetor experts) is selling his 1967 Porsche 911S Coupe there right now.

If you're more patient, there are Southern California firms who might take it on consignment.
