6 volt electric fuel pump

#1 Post by Greg Frick »

Who currently sells the 6 volt electric fuel pump?

Mine works only when it wants to work. I cleaned all the electric contact points and then it worked. Now after sitting 4 months it refuses to run.
Does ethanol eat at the innards of these things?

Airtex E8902 from Amazon and other sources. Don't know about the ethanol.

Doubt very much the ethanol can cause the pump not to to work unless you mean it is running and not pumping. If it does not run then the pump electrics/mechanicals have failed in some way. Before giving up check the ground connection and once removed bench test. Many times I have had stuff refuse to work on a car and then work OK on the bench proving it was a bad installation.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Thanks for the leads.
I will try the Airtex after investigating the ground issue yet again.
I tried to use Zims' as THE pump but will rig the Airtex up as a primer.
Perhaps I was asking too much of the electric pump.
In any case, when the key turns and I do not hear the pump, I know I am in trouble.

I hooked mine up to a hot line (ignition does not have to be turned on) and use a momentary switch for prime.

Where do you guys like to mount your pumps? I'd like to install one to be used as a primer pump only, not as a primary pump.
I would suppose as close to the tank as possible is the preferred choice.

On my T-6 coupe, I mounted the pump on the right side diagonal. It's close to the tank/petcock. I ran the power wire through the brake light switch wire grommet.

If you Google the topic, there are previous threads on the primer pumps.

Plenty of room under the passenger floorboard. Mounts rather easily to the tunnel vertical sheet metal and the short piece of fuel hose therein provides a place to insert the fuel hoses to the pump.

There might be some who bemoan the fact that we're placing a fuel component inside the cabin, but the short hose was there already.....

For a C I think under the car up front is best because the petcock is under there. It's a very easy to install, taking about 1.5 hours. You can see in the picture where the fuel comes from the petcock to the pump and then back to the engine. We used about 2' of hose to loop around and keep clear of the tie rod. The wiring is very short and convenient. I used a momentary switch that fit in the hole made for sunroof to right under the key. There are a couple spots to take the wire from there to the pump. In mine there was already a hole in the frame to mount the pump. This follows Alex Mestas and Mike Wilson's approach. Note the pump is sensitive to polarity and don't forget to put a fuse in the line.

Mounted my `65C cab's 6v Airtex #8902 as a primer pump under the passenger floor board as pictured, with a push button hold switch hidden under the dash which is connected to the cigar lighter terminal for power.
