WHEEL ADAPTERS ? > 356A TO 356C DISK

#1 Post by Joe Sidore »

When I went from drum brakes to disk brakes on my 1956 356A, I lost the ability to wear my original wheels.

I’m looking for an adapter that would allow me to have the best of both worlds, original look and updated braking.

Has anyone ever heard of a “Wheel Adapter” that allows you to mount the Original set of Wheels with “Moon Hubcaps”,

on the later model configuration having disk brakes ?

Thanks for your time...

I'm in the same boat. I'd be interested in an adapter to go back to drum brake wheels on my disc brake A without losing the disc brakes. Hope someone has an idea for this.

Some years ago, I installed the Classic and Speed Parts front disc brake conversion on my '63 coupe. With it, you retain your drum brake rims. Not sure if it or another system or an adapter is available to do the same.

I have two sets left of hub caps that I have modified to fit "A" "B" style cars modified to a disc brake car.
To make them you start with a set of "C" hub caps and then cut out the centers so you will have access to the emblem. Then you take "A" "B" style hub caps and cut them to the same exact diameter as rhe "C" outside diameter ones.

The hard part is welding the two hub caps together without warping the hub cap.

Then I have them chrome plated. I have only two sets left at $750 per set of four. And will not make any more as they cost more to make now with plating and machining. Would be double the cost to do them now.

I did one set of moons but they are extremely difficult as you almost scrap 3 to get 1 good one,

Joe

Check out https://www.airkewld.com/ I think they make a complete disc brake kit for 5X205 wheels.

Robert, thank you for the kind words, it took me three years to finally perfect the process. It was an expensive learning curve and I understand how people feel about wanting the original. It drove me crazy to drive my beautiful Roadster around with C hub caps.

Having seen several sets of these on cars in the Cincinnati area, I can say just how awesome the workmanship is.
Great solution for running early style hubcaps on your disc brake car.

Joe ,
Any adaptors would move the wheels out so far that you would have fender rub with almost any tire.

Unless you had Carrera off set wheels. That would give you 20mm for an adaptor.

Before I got my C coupe I built a plastic speedster (It's lent and time to confess). I had disc brakes on it from the start and used adapters to get "wide 5" wheels on it. At turnpike speeds the wobble was terrifying. Then I found the "wide 5" disc rotors that needed no adapters and the problem was solved. I doubt that the rotors are compatible with Porsche calipers but I still have a pair of rotors for the front on a shelf in the shop. If anyone is interested I could post pictures later. I still have the adapters also, but they were for 4-lug VW to "wide 5".

Harlan,

As always your correct-I should have mentioned that 356 Carrera wheels for GT drum brakes with the proper offset for fat wheel adaptors are easy to find and inexpensive.

I know these adapters exist I have seen a set on a 911. they allowed the VW wheels to be used with the 944 hubs and brakes on VW dune buggies with a open axle VW transmission. Take a look in your dune butty stuff!
