Mecum Monterey 356s and "356"

#1 Post by Sean M Rooks »

Got an email today promoting a number of Porsche 356s appearing at the Mecum Monterey auction. Wanted to poll the group on the write-up of the 1962 Twin Grill Cabriolet:

https://www.mecum.com/lots/CA0817-30011 ... -114068161

This car confused me (but I must admit that I'm not as up on the drop-top tubs) - chrome windshield frame, twin grills, T-6 hood, Super 90 engine, D'Ieteren built - but called a Cabriolet. Is this a real thing? I thought chrome frames were only on Roadsters, and I thought Roadsters only had the earlier round hood style.

Then there's this "356":

https://www.mecum.com/lots/CA0817-30608 ... -114068161

And I'm just not sure what to say about that. That rear 3/4 is something only a mother could love.

First car is a '62 Roadster. No more, no less. Seems desirable: Super 90 engine, cool color (Oslo blue), and low miles.

Edwin - that's what I thought. And a quick Google search shows me a bunch of nice looking T6 Roadsters. Had no idea.

As a fan of the later squared-off hood style with the upright fenders - it's a pretty car.

They are rare, but there are T6 Roadsters with the squared off hood and twin grills, but it should not have been called a cab. The second one is horrible, might be good for parts!

The Twin Grill Roadster is a great car! And being a Super 90 is exceptional. For some reason I had 34 units built in my head, but I would have to go reference that. My wife and I got our wedding photos in a friends S90 Twin Grill Roadster!
I am surprised at the auction estimate being that high, and I didn't see photos of the COA (I don't think), so would want a little more info. Oslo Blue would be amazing!!!

A true unicorn, a S90 Twin Grill, I had one earlier this year, probably won't see another. Pulled from a frozen and very scary mountaintop, made for a pretty picture, but was terrifying driving down with a rare car on the trailer.

The dented rocker, broken horn button, rust on driver's door corner, and generally wavy sides makes their price estimate seem about double of what my guess is. We will see what the market says.

Why is it when they say "believed original factory Oslo Blue" that it doesn't quite ring true ? Another car where $10-15,000 could have turned the price equation hugely positive, starting with the engine compartment.......

When I bought my '62 Roadster, all indications were it was a S90. That turned out not to be the case. A Kardex or CoA for this car would help the sales price.

89748 is a nice car.
I have 89805 and had 89758 for 25 years. I got COA's years ago when PCNA was in Reno. Neither matched the cars. I bought 805 in 68 from the original owner, and 758 in 72 from the Navy officer that imported it. 758 had C disc brakes, put on at the factory, documented from the original owner in Germany, not the COA. These D'leteren cars are rare but the remaining paperwork records are not very accurate.
89686 just posted in eBay for 275k. That's four twin grills for sale in three weeks.

Re: the twin-grille roadster: Look carefully at the engine. VW generator pulley, pretty sure no T6 had that oil filler can, the blue plug wires are a tell to me.
Oh, and regarding the second, I hope someone finds a wrecking yard which will take it.

One picture has a drivers side antennae, two pics don't. No radio in any picture.
One picture has aftermarket speakers one doesn't.
Seems like wrong oil filler and wrong color fan shroud.

The disappearing antenna is a neat trick.

Bill, I don't follow the first part of your post. What does 220160 have to do with this car?
