Hi Ed,

ausgel. am (ausgeliefert am) is the day it left the plant. Ab Besch (Abnahmebescheinigung) is when it was sold/ registered.

It left the plant with 7017xx, the hand written engine number below it is a warranty replacement (KD= Kundendienst) that was performed at Mahag, a dealer in Munich. so 812155 is the '2nd' original engine to your car installed in 1964 under warranty after 41k kilometers on the first engine. Cool.

I have 89714. Mine was a 1600N, but that number was crossed out and replaced with a S90 before it left the plant. It also received airport gears. It's had a rough life. Spent the first 5 years as a race car in Canada, BUT it won a few races, so i can settle on pedigree :)

Jules

Can you PM me on 89805. I have owned the car for 50 years. I have a old COA from the 80's when Reno was doing them free. I went there and got the letters, but nothing matched on either roadster so I did not pay much attention.

A while back we were asking about value of a 356. Does number matching count? Does original motor mean something? Des a Harry Pello motor add value? Does having you car at the auction represent the true value or, because you could have two bidders trying to outbid each other and drive up the price? Older restoration vs new, fresh restoration. A lot of factors are currently at the Mecum Auction. Lot F 51 is a 356 C Cab red/black. Log in and you will see the description including a Harry Pello SC Motor. Currently the catalog suggested a value of $ 150,000 to $ 170,000.

So here you have a 356 C Cab with a "SC Harry Pello motor" and older restoration, and "The Bid Goes ON".

I have my own thoughts on this car as I knew it was consigned to Mecum and when you agree to put your car in the auction you send them the "Pink Slip" Title for the car. I thought is should have been shown at the 356 Club Concours in Huntington Beach last month to get a real appraisal of the value of the car.

If anyone saw the car and would like to give us their thoughts that would help 356 owners who have questions regarding true value.

I'll be surprised if this one gets to the $150K mark.

I recently bought a 1960 T5 Cab that had the same thing, an SC motor installed. There was no mention on the COA but when I pulled a Kardex the SC was clearly listed as a replacement in June of 1964. My guess was he went to the Factory with a blown S90 motor, they offered to re-build it, which would take weeks or put an engine in today and he would be on the road. Also, the SC was a superior motor, so it was a wise choice.

Adam just that signature on the COA is worth gold!

The SC was installed at dealer Glinicke in Kassel, Germany. That is where owner 2 lived according to the Kardex. Glinicke is still a dealer to this day!

I was hoping since that since the bearer of that signature was on this board he might explain why the info was on the Kardex but not the COA, but when I asked all I got was silence.

Oh Adam,

During the excitement in Monterey maybe the signature bearer was elsewhere and is not following our forum. Another little know fact is that there was a golf tournament at Spyglass for College players, and the officials stayed at the Quail Lodge Ocean was blocked off so trying to get to Starbucks before heading to Spyglass was a real trying experience. Cars were lined up to Salinas at 5:30 am.

Thanks Adam,

For those who are not in Monterey or Carmel I wanted to point out that Monterey offers more than Cars. Carmel is a big Golf destination with Pebble and the Courses along the 17 mile drive and you would think with 20 Lambos followed by Ferrari's and Porsche on the 17 mile drive, that Monterey was in Car Week mode. The sound through the trees is enough to get your heart racing. Monterey Car Week is a life style, and yet Golf seems to fit right in. The college students playing at Spyglass hope that in the future they can win a tournament and afford one of the finest cars in the world.
The latest golf glove tells the player they tee off how far they hit the golf ball.
Thats technology.

Wow!! It's going to take a lot of time and money to make that one right! Painted in his garage? Really? The estate did well.
