Chassis nr. in bodypanels

#1 Post by Lars Hvidsteen »

Did all 356 up to 1965 have the last 3 digits stamped in the body panels?

I have been looking at several originals car 1960-1965 without stamps i front hood and engine lid?

thanks

Can't say for sure but my Convertible has the 3 digits on all panels (including windshield frame, top, bumpers and hardware) except the hood. In researching some years ago I learned it was not unusual for the hood and sometimes other panels to not be stamped.

Drauz and Karmann stamped the numbers on the removable part of the latch. Also, sometimes the number is found on the right-hand side of the front lid hinge panel.

As Vic mentioned Karmann bodied cars had last 2 or 3 digits on the latch of engine lid. Here is a picture of my 65 Karmann coupe's engine lid as an example. My 65 Reutter coupe has last 3 numbers on the lid's rain shield. So location can depend on who manufactured the body.

Had forgotten the details. As Vic and others stated both lids on the D are stamped on the removable latches and back of rain tray but not on the panels.

My 62 Roadster had the numbers on the inside of the gas fill lid, under the doors, hood and rear deck lid.

My Drauz Roadster has the last two digits stamped on the front hood release and the engine deck rain tray. It has the last three digits stamped on the inside right side of the folding top frame.

Possibly of interest I contacted a friend with a very early 4 digit car. None of his removable panels have numbers stamped. So the habit of stamping removable panels must have started later in production. Anyone know when?
