scam email from our classified James Shelhart

#1 Post by Ned Gorski »

selling some parts in the classified and got an odd response.
i ask the buyer about his car what year and what other parts he may need, i only get emails talking about a commitment checks that i never asked for.

im guessing its a scam as i can't find a list member named James Shelhart..

$2600 is fine with me, i live in Savannah GA so i will not be able to visit you to see and confirm the condition of the product but i have an inspector/professional who knows much about the product and will visit you to inspect the condition of the product as you have advertised.I will make a deposit of $1,000 as commitment fee via check and i will pay you the balance same day the inspector confirm to me that the product is in good condition as advertised.let me know if this is acceptable.

regards Ned

Ned, I received the same email from the same "member"about some seats that I have for sale. The language is definitely scamish, so I didn't even bother to respond.

Was this guy's email "jjlissa10@gmail.com"? If so, I got one on one of my ads. The short answers didn't seem strange until I read the thread.

Same as a Craigslist scammer. Fishing for emails.
Craigslist scammers usually say they are out of the country on business
and will have there personal assistant handle it.

Why do it at a sight where you have to pay to join ?

Hi Folks
We have had a couple people we caught posting scam ads the past week and we have kicked them off. One of which was the jjlissa10@gmail.com guy which we think may have joined a second time(under a different name) after we kicked him off the first time. So not only did he post but he responded to various posts already up as he had access before we caught him.

This guy is obviously an out of work brain surgeon if he was smart enough to come up with a scam where you send him money to "insure" a transaction then he will send you the full amount back after he gets the goods. Not very likely anyone will be taken here. It is an aggravation but we just need to be aware and if it is not a name you recognize: look at when they joined, and is it really too good of a price to be true?

As far as this James Shelhart. We have not figured that one out yet. However I do want to point out there is a member named "Shel Hart" in FL who is in no way whatsoever connected to this other joker.

Let's be careful out there
Curt

I've noticed on some other forums you have to post a certain amount before you can post for sale stuff. I had this happen to me, I was helping Big John sell some Gravely items, so I thought I would post them in the Gravely forums. One of them that I joined, it was free, says you have to introduce yourself to the group before you can post thing for sale and I think you had to have a post count of at least 5. I know this won't stop the really determined scammers, but if we can cut down on them with one new procedure it would help.

Curt,

That email address and the Name James Shelhart were used in my situation. It was "James Shelhart" contacting me with that email address so it appears to me at least it was the same person.

Good idea and fairly common practice.

Yesterday I asked him what make and model car he was going to use the old heat exchangers off my A for.

The answer: 2015 BMW3 Series!
