Re: failed main oil seal

That seems like the hard way to solve the problem considering that a single lip can get the job done well enough. I was wondering if the first lip is sure to leak enough to keep the second lip happy or if they might sometimes have a problem in spite of a reshaped flywheel.

That would involve machining into the radius; a guaranteed failure mode!
I also think cutting the seal lip is easier than machining a flywheel?
That first lip is intended to scrape off crud before it gets to the main sealing lip; intended for a shaft that slides in and out; not what our flywheels do.

Jim:

For more discussion on "points" of interest and commentary, just type double lip seals into the search box and search the main discussion. You should get a post that discusses the two lip seal ad nausea.

Thanks, Ab. I'm getting tired of writing about it.

Jim -
Rather than an explanation, recommend you enter "flywheel oil seal lip" under the above Registry "search" portal, which will provide an array of informative postings/inputs re. oil seal lip modifications relative to their flywheel interface.

Oops! Sorry Albert, didn't mean to coincidentally partially duplicate your prior post which I must have negligently overlooked.
