Older Throwout Bearing with newer pressure plate?
My 1962 B had an older spring type pressure plate in it with a matching Throw-out bearing.
I am replacing the pressure plate with the newer style, but wanted to know if the older bearing can be used with the newer spring plate. The bearing was basically new when I disassembled the car before the restoration.
I would like to save the 100 bucks or so if the older bearing is just as good as a new one.

Do you have pictures of both pressure plates? There are enough different pressure plates and throw-out bearing styles you can easily go wrong. I once went through that, including ripping the arms off the release lever (I'm not saying I am smart). Lets see what you have.

Look at the pictures in the Stoddard catalog. See here and decide what you have, then decide on which TO bearing/clutch matches what you have.

Re: Older Throwout Bearing with newer pressure plate?
I have to assume the new pressure plate is the one shown bolted to the flywheel in which case it is not compatible with the TO bearing shown. However if you use that same pressure plate with the additional collar it will work. It looks like a 180mm clutch so this should work. You could also perhaps find the collar that has been removed from that type of pressure plate and fit it to yours though that may be a long shot. The correct TO bearing for that pressure plate is unfortunately not compatible with your trans as you need the guide shaft for it to work and a different throw out arm. Maybe someone modified your trans as it should have had the later style throwout bearing and guide shaft. A picture of the trans input shaft will help clarify that.

For the new throwout you will need the type that slides on the guide tube. Is your tube still on the transmission? I think you had a VW clutch and t/o bearing before. Is your disk thickness proper, and flywheel depth still stock dimension? You have to make sure nothing was altered for the old clutch setup.

Kennedy makes an adapter to use early TO bearing with the finger clutch. I got one from Vic when I put my S90 engine in a 55 coupe. Can't post pic of mine as this site has a very small file size limit .

Kennedy doesn't seem to list that any more but I found a Moore Products that has it- it says it fits 200mm VW clutch, but it sounds like it could work. I think its only $15, but if you have the guide tube intact I would go factory. Also your old clutch could be early Porsche or VW, maybe your flywheel has not been modified but good to measure to be sure.

Re: Older Throwout Bearing with newer pressure plate?
In the words of the late, great Rosanne Rosanna Danna, "Its Always Somethin!"
My tranny says the following:
741.301.101.00
13/61
50565
91 741/2A
The clutch (for the past 40 years) is a 180 mm 6 spring plate.
The shaft doesn't have the guide tube, so is my simplest option to just replace with a new 6 spring plate and move on? Or should I purchase a after market "Contact Ring" (which is spec'd for a 200 mm spring plate) and hope I can get it into my new 180 mm spring plate?

Are the three holes still threaded and in good shape? If so you should get the correct guide tube. (maybe from Vic?) Is it just the picture, or are the release arms offset to the left? They should be centered on the input shaft.

Your clutch fork appears to be the later one and will not support the old TO bearing. The fork and bearing will be centered by the guide tube.
I have whatever you need; cheap; except the TO bearing.

Re: Older Throwout Bearing with newer pressure plate?
Thank you, everyone, for the great information. I wasn't even aware that the guide tubes were something that could be removed or added. Mine, for some reason, had no guide tube, but I have made arrangements for getting a replacement.

Re: Older Throwout Bearing with newer pressure plate?
The later clutch is vastly superior to the old spring plate type. Use a little high temp grease on the outside of the guide tube and also on each 'ear' of the throw-out bearing.
