Undercoating Products and Application

Among the undercoat products such as Wurth, 3M, Rustoleum and others, which will result in the most original look? Does an aerosol can application produce the same finish as a gun? I'd prefer to use spray cans as the process seems much less messy and easier to control.
Finally how many cans would it take to do a '63 coupe with no undercoat?
Thanks,
Jack

I had my '63 coupe sprayed with Wurth through a gun. It took 12 cans which included some inside the doors and under the hood (Karmann-bodied car). I like the look.

What was the actual material used by Porsche, and is it still available? On the underside, it looks like something akin to roof tar that might have been brushed on, as in early 911s. On the topside surfaces of floor, engine bay and trunk, it looks like a sprayed on, textured material with black paint over that.

Mike, I assume you had this done by a paint/body shop? And if so, what did it cost (labor and materials)? Thanks!

Dave:

The shop I used has one guy that does the body and paint work and another that disassembles and mechanically strips the paint down to bare metal. After paint, he then color-sands and polishes, preps and under-coats the car, and rebuilds components and systems as needed and reassembles the car. With the exception of stripping the car, he basically works on an hourly basis so I don't have a definitive cost for the under-coating.

I'll have to dig through my receipts to see what the case of Wurth under-coating cost. I purchased it through Ed Rutherford at Klasse 356.

i recently did mine using the Wurth product
it took about 4 hours to do the masking
then myself and another fellow (he was the talent) sprayed the car.
the car was on a hoist and was a shell.. we did do the undercoating after paint..
if I did it again.. would do it on a rotisserie, prior to paint

the spraying took us one evening.. that includes set up and clean up it then took a few more hours the next day to take the masking off and clean up the over spray that occurred in a few locations.

so summary = 14 hours

In the middle of this page, we showed the masking and spraying process.

good pictures..
the other small trick is to mask off a few areas like where the steering box goes. the parking brake, the bracket for the steering dampener, the various holes coming out of the rear tunnel.
and more.. just look around when you are masking

I know the factory undercoated the cars prior to paint (as seen in the video, "Made By Hand".) The 356's and early 911/912's had a bit of overspray.

My car was undercoated after paint.
