If the switch is working and just the stalk is rusty, you might try finding a chrome plated telescoping antenna from an old portable radio or boom-box, cut it apart, and if you are lucky you will find that one of the sections will be a slip fit over the rusty stalk. Cut to length, slip over the rusty stalk and screw the knob back on to hold it in place.

I use an inexpensive radio antenna, the top shaft piece. You can find one that "Just" slips over the stalk. Sand all the rust off to get the dia. as small as possible. I've done this on show cars, and not been caught.

I have also used the telescoping magnet from harbor freight. I believe the shaft is stainless and is very cheap so it is no problem to destroy it for the section.
