59A carb linkage issue

#1 Post by Rusty Ferrell »

I recently purchased the above 356 and as always can't keep my hands off it. The car has the stock ndix Zenith carbs, I've adjusted links and set the lever in front of fan housing at 50 mm. I've checked the manuals and confirmed the rod coming from the bellcrank is 520 mm, 716 gearbox and what appears to be the correct piece on the bell rank. The rod is quite short of reaching the fan housing pivot and if the bell rank is moved to its shortest distance from the fan housing pivot the throttle rod coming from the pedal is about 25 mm short. Where am I going wrong? I've ordered the 545 mm rod from Stoddard but why isn't the original parts fitting as the should?
Thanks,
Rusty

Rusty,

Unfortunately, the 520mm pull rod is short; Your car being a '59 A, it could use the 545mm (1" longer) rod used on the listed late BT5 vs. the 605mm (2" longer) rod for the early BT5.
However, the rest of the linkages must be adjusted after carb balancing @ high & idle rpms; Then adjusting the linkage
forward to the pedal & set the stop.

Thanks Dick, I'm on it. Should have the longer pull rod in a couple of days.
