What's this?

#1 Post by Mervyn Hyde »

Adjusting the brake and clutch free play and found this under the mats behind the pedals. Probably not 356. Looks like it might have been to clamp a cable or shaft. Not threaded.

Thanks Jan! Ha. I have never needed to adjust that. Original cars are often an adventure.

Attached by the small set screw. You can see where it came from in this link: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=39360&hilit=odometer+reset

Merv, I use my odometer trip feature as an adjunct to my mainly for entertainment fuel gauge. After 200 miles I expect to run out of gas in the main tank by 250 miles so it is a warning to fill up before I have to switch to reserve. Re-attach it and zero the trip at every fuel fill up.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Its amazing what we can find inside the instrument panel , while putting in new instrument light bulbs I found a taped up red wire that is 6 volts when key is on , my guess for the other type engine Carrera ?. Oh David good advice on setting the odometer trip feature to zero we seem to depend on the gas gauge that can be misleading when it jumps around.

Yes thanks David and Doug. I recall the warning about adjusting the trip meter while driving. Same on my early 911.

That little set screw is tight in there so can sit in penetrant for a while. I probably wont use the adjuster anyway.

My fuel gauge is pretty accurate and doesn't flicker since I fitted a capacitor over the outside terminals on the sender and cleaned out the inside of the variable resistance. That can't last ...

Merv,
Got one of those from Zims auto and goes on back of the gauge itself works real good to no flicker although it 's not steady but that's the nature of these type of gauges I guess.

Thanks also Herlin. Yes I bought the right capacitor for $5.00 and soldered it in and I have a gauge that is steady. Amazing. The trip meter is on again and it all works!

David is suspect that there are many "David Jones" in the Valleys of Wales, but here in Australia it is the name of one of our largest, and first, national department store.

You are correct Merv. I grew up with more than a few David Jones's in all the schools I attended. My first name is Hugh but that did not help as all that did was confuse the Issue as there were also a lot of Hugh's in school. We were often distinguished by which class we were in such as Hugh or David 3A. Funnily enough girls names were never duplicated as much.
Interesting history of David Jones Dept store.

Yep, I broke a odometer once by resetting while moving. Don't do it.
