With all the knowledge on this site it would grow well and be a major resource for all!

All we need guys is to have someone capable step up and volunteer. Make a meaningful proposal to the Trustees.

356 Wiki
Edwin has a great suggestion to start a 356 Wikipedia.
Have you ever written a Wikipedia article, edited one or set up a Wiki?
There is free software available which takes time and effort to set up, maintain and submit articles to as well as update, and here is a link to an overview of several of them.
http://www.clickonf5.org/internet/10-fr ... ngine/7599
After reading this you can see that while it can be done it is not trivial.
If you have experience in this arena, send me an email if you want to be on a small team to work on this.
Rather than discussing the details via Talk as we proceed, I believe we will have a more focused discussion via email.
Tom

Re: A Small Idea with Huge Benefit
I use Google search every day to find answers. I always start my search with "Porsche 356"...
It works but could be much easier if the questions were classified by theme on the 356Talk Forum : carburetors, gauges, seats, bumpers...
Too many good information is lost, we need to have better access to that knowledge.
Thank you !

Stirring this back to life. I was talking today with a longtime member and owner, and this idea came up again. Doesn't the club have resources to make this come to fruition? The publishing of the magazine and the running of this website aren't purely volunteer efforts, are they?

Re: A Small Idea with Huge Benefit
Not in favor.
If any of you use Wiki as a research source, you quickly realize that there is no reason to waste time on the article; it has been put together by many people, some few who actually know what they are posting about. The others, not so much.
Read the comment and immediately go the the cited source: Wiki is good for that reason; it collects other sources which can then be vetted for accuracy.
Such unexamined claims may be fine for discussions regarding who was the best rock group, but if you need information on, say, proper ring gaps, a random opinion ain't gonna cut it.
The current Forum (and the old list-serv) both include folks who are willing to offer hard-found knowledge, and if you are around for a while, you can read the byline and have a pretty sure indication on the area of expertise.
Pick two from above: If James D. posts regarding early cars, you're well advised to read carefully. If Jim L. mentions how to judge a seller, well, you can avoid blowing a wad on a lemon.
Wiki is anonymous; wanna guess which valve clearance 'opinion' is right for you? Have at it.

Wiki sources are not always reliable. I would never trust wiki for anything important at all.

Adam, if you have been banned from many clubs, could the problem be something else. On subject, if anyone made a video of me fixing anything, it would discourage everyone from picking up a wrench. .............Jim.

With all due respect, anyone who feels Wikipedia articles are "completely free of nonsense" hasn't been paying close enough attention. Here is one scholarly paper related to this topic:
https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/7113426/
Also, simply search the web for "Wikipedia controversy" and "Wikipedia bias" when you have a fair block of free time.

Re: A Small Idea with Huge Benefit
Brian,
I looked at the summary you refer to, and it mentions vandalism and controversy.
Vandalism on Wikipedia can't last long or be pervasive, because I have never seen it. Nonetheless, it is easy to see that it could be a problem, especially in the wider world. I would be very surprised if it were a problem here. If this arose, we could simply ban the vandal.
Controversy is common on this talk group. There's nothing wrong with that.

Of course not. But then I presume you wouldn't say this talk group is "completely free of nonsense".Edwin Ek wrote:Brian,
