Speedster Windshield assembly

What was the "original" sealing material (if there was anything at all) on speedsters on the bottom of the windshield to body, and what is an appropriate modern substitution?

my old man actually used plumbers putty because he didn't want to break a windshield the next time it had to come off. Not the best look. I've never seen an oem install and its that time again.,,
