I agree with Thom as to paint/powder coat prior to clip placement. Wheels are exposed to many different elements, thus making powder coating a nice alternative. And the color match is not hard !! George

Stoddard sells a nice match.

I tend towards the original look and paint treatment on date-matched rims, but hey we all have different preferences. I never really liked the chrome look for some reason.

But after Thom's comment "ruined by cat pee", I should have mixed some cat repellent in that paint :P

I powder coated 4.5 wheels on a 65 911 I restored. While I like ease of cleaning, I found (in my case anyway) it difficult to get a correct, original looking color match. Athough the photo here looks good, in natural light it does not. In retrospect, I would paint using Stoddard silver.

John, is "Stoddard Silver" the correct color for the wheels? Thanks

As Adam says, it's a "nice match." There may be a powder coat color that replicates original; maybe someone knows.

A previous owner powder coated the wheels on my 356A grey--they don't look remotely correct.

But, at the 2017 LitMeet

· Perfect Custom Made Wheels · (310) 819-6752
· 16516 S Western Ave
· Gardena, Ca. 90247

had some powder-coated wheels that looked a heck of a lot like silver pant. Perfect Custom Made Wheels was once Bolton's Classic Wheels.

When I redo my wheels I plan to use paint but their silver powder-coat's definitely worth a look if you want the extra durability.

About 90% of the wheels we sell go directly to Perfect Motion AKA Bolton, Carol and Javier are good and cheap, two words you can rarely string together when talking about Porsches. I highly recommend people send them there rather than restoring them by themselves. They do more 356 wheels in a week than most of us will do in a lifetime.

Thanks Adam for info regarding PC paint at Perfect Custom Made Wheels. I just had a set of 4.5x15 wheels chromed by them and I couldn't be more pleased!! Flawless.
