How much does ARVS charge for this service ?
Thanks, Martin
Martin, they get $55 to deal with the DMV, an amount I'll gladly pay to avoid those folks. All together, including secure-transport of the documents, it looks like less than $200.

For what it's worth, as early as February of 1988, my '65 C was registered in CA under the chassis number. I rescued it and brought it to AZ in December 2006. Cost me the outlandish fee of $35 to register it here......
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Thanks Ron. Need to register my 53. Last registered in 92.
I never registered the car in my name. I purchased the car in the mid 90's for $800 with no motor or trans.
The previous owner did not date the pink. Would like to register it with the vin # and get some 53 plates with the DMV YOM form.

I guess I'll go to the DMV and ask them what procedure to follow after I get my COA from Porsche
Any advice ? Take the pink and tell them the truth or back date the pink ?

Been collecting parts for this car for 20 years and getting ready to put it together FINALLY !
Not for sale. The car is mostly together and complete and the plan is to make it a driver first then restore at a later date.

Any help and advice on how to approach the DMV would be helpful.
Thanks, Martin

My local AAA has done VIN verifications multiple times and completed all the title paperwork with new titles received a few weeks later from CA DMV. If your local office is not helpful, ask any local used car lot for the name of their 3rd party, DMV approved VIN Inspector. They charge $75-$150 depending on if you bring the car to them or if they have to come to you.

In the state of VT can a car be titled from out of state to title a car without a title? I think someone said it could be done but they give you plates also.I this true?

Hi Robert,

If a car is over 15yrs old no title is required to register in VT, but sales tax on NADA value will apply and a VIN verification will be necessary if you request an 'exempt' title. Paperwork is available on line: Registration form, official VT Bill of Sale and VIN verification form.

Wrap up:
For a total cost of $145 and ZERO time spent at the DMV, I now have a title listing the chassis number of my Speedster as the VIN. I am more than satisfied. Some of you may have a AAA office with better staffing and if one was available for me, it would have saved some money.

Martin, in my opinion, I will pay quite a bit of money to avoid any contact with any government bureaucrat, so if I were you, I'd search up the local equivalent to All Vehicles Registration Services noted on page one and ask them.

Years ago I imported a 356 to California.
The German papers listed two numbers,
1. Karosserienummer
2. Motor nummer
Guess which one they chose?

John, you're lucky they didn't chose the paint code; delete
Jim is correct; gratuitous insult removed.

HI, All.

My contribution: http://www.vehicleverifier.com/home Just worked with Bob, the owner, on two coupes w/o any paperwork. Very effective, knowledgeable and reasonable.

My thoughts: I dread going to the DMV or any gov't office, however, I wonder how many 'bureaucrats' we have in our club that are pretty offended by the gross generalizations about them!! Doesn't help our culture. Love you Ron and what you've contributed for all of us....please don't be offended.

What I hope is the final caution:
CA requires proof of insurance to register a vehicle. So in changing the VIN from the engine# to the chassis#, the DMV now finds a VIN without proof of insurance. I got notice that the registration will soon be suspended if this is not corrected.
In a call to Hagerty this morning, they request copies of the COA (with the NLA chassis and engine #s) and the VIN verification, and they assure me that it will promptly be straightened out.
So if your state required proof of insurance, contact your carrier when changing the VIN and you won't get nasty notes from the DMV.

Some CA DMV's are OK, if you both make an appointment and have all your ducks in a row in the first place. The '60 cab that we restored was registered in Washington, under its engine number, which was long gone. We had the COA, insurance, and the DMV forms all lined up. We told the story of the car, they looked at the relevant chassis spots, (after we pointed them out), and we were on our way in about an hour. That is as slick as it gets, I think. (Oddly enough, the engine shows up listed as the original engine for another 356 on Eric's site, which seems unusual. Somebody has bad information.)
