Gas Tank: How do I tell what year? Value?

#1 Post by Wayne Arny »

Pictured is a tank I bought to replace the one in my '57 coupe. After cleaning it up and putting one coat of paint on it, I realized I'd bought the wrong model. There was no fitting for the fuel level sender! Therefore, to which model Porsche does this belong? Pre-A? In researching this I saw ads that talked about a date stamp, but I can't find one on this tank. Should there be a date stamp, and if so, where? Thanks!

Wayne,
The date stamps that I have seen are on the strip of metal on the front of the tank. Your last photo (IMG 0148) shows the strip at the bottom. Look on the left side, that is where I found mine. The numbers are stamped pretty small (1/4" or so) and are easily covered by paint.

Left side of the picture? And on what part of the strip exactly? I just looked, but nothing. May have to remove the paint in whatever area you say yours is in. Thanks!

Mine was stamped on the horizontal part about 3" from the left end. It's the strip of metal that contacts trunk floor.

Regarding the value, if you are showing a car that needs one, it's going to be very expensive to alter a later one to look like that.
I can tell you that MY '56 Speedster 81109 had a similar tank and a dipstick.

OK. I scraped the "horizontal part," both top and underneath, and nothing. Pictures below of the top strip. Am I looking in the right place? And if there is no date stamp present, is that unusual? Thoughts? Thanks!

You are looking at the right spot. Maybe that was a replacement tank that wasn't stamped ?

Wayne,
Sorry for late respond ,Just noticed your post...
Very early tanks ( Not Split 356 cars ) like this A style, will have no fuel gauge hole .
You have priced it very fairly.I have same condition early Pre A tank ,I would ask min $1,500
So yours is a deal with the condition she is in.

That's not a 1952-53 tank. The April 1952 to April 1954 tanks had a shorter tower for the breather. They switched to the tall breather tower between July and Sep 1954. There was an intermediate breather in shape of a tall hook that was used in mid-1954.

Given this tank has a tall breather and no fuel gauge sender, it's likely a 1954+ Speedster tank. Speedsters did not have fuel gauges during the pre-A era.

The 1952-54 tank with low breather, no sender.

The mid-1954 tank with the hook breather.

The late 1954 onward tank with tall breather and sender for coupes and cabs.
