What's this loose wire?

#1 Post by Mitch Covington »

Today I changed my plugs and ran across this loose wire behind the right carb. I originates in the bundle that comes from the right side of the car. Any idea where it's supposed to connect?

thanks,
Mitch

If it's black, it's known as the spare wire to be used on a Carrera-engined car. The other end is under the dash. That said, I haven't seen one with a ring terminal. I mine goes to coil and the electric tach I'm using instead of the mechanical one.

Cars from about '58 or so had a wiring harness which included the extra ignition lead so cars ordered with the twin-ignition 4-cams could be randomly drawn from the cars on the assembly line. Typically, the wire is wrapped around the voltage regulator mount in the rear and terminated in a small terminal strip left sort of loose under the dash.
Since you don't have a 4-cam, you can use it to drive an electro tach head when you fit a Pre Mat or other full-flow filter adapter.
Edit: Mike beat me to it.

I used mine for wiring in oil pressure gauge which I mounted in the clock hole in the dash.
