356C Hub Caps

#1 Post by Eric McKinley »

I have a nice set of 356C hub caps which I would like to use.

They would have originally came with the silver centre badges.

I do however like the look of the coloured centre Porsche badges on the hub cap.

I am going to place a classified add on the registry but before I do I need a little help with a question I have.

Will the coloured Porsche centre badges fit onto the hub caps that originally had the silver centre badges. Are the rear mounting pins the same dimensions.

This will give me an idea if I can use what I have and only need the centre caps or the full hub caps.

viewtopic.php?f=13&t=32680 Both are correct as well as baby moon hubcaps. I have never changed the center but should be the same.

Thanks Doug, so you believe the coloured centres should fit the hub caps that came with the silver centre caps.

I shall place a classified for 4 coloured centre badges.

The only thing you can't do easily is to go to the plain C hubcap from a set of ones with the badges. When we bought a new C in '64 it had the plain hubcaps. If I remember correctly, the SCs at the time came with badged hubcaps.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

I learned a lesson at the WCH when my '65 C went Clunk, Clunk really loud from the right rear. I had it towed to Heckmann and Thiemann and it took a while to diagnose - loose hub cap. When Porsche went to disc brakes on the '64 and '65 they "improved" the hub caps and removed the clips from the wheel in favor of bumps on the wheels and a hub cap that went over the bumps. My hub cap went on fine and felt tight, but it was loose enough that you could grab it with your hand and rotate it. Clunk, clunk so beware.

Richard, three 1"-long strips of 3/4" self-adhesive velcro loop at ~120* around the 'hollow' of the hub caps takes up enough space to shut them up.

Yes, the colored disks mount the same as the silver ones. Easily interchangeable.

If you twist them on the wheel after you have slammed them into place they will be more likely not to come loose. Mine have not so far by using this technique. I do not know why it works. Sometimes they will not twist and that also seems to ensure they will stay in place.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

I believe that it was only the repros that are loose sometimes. I don't think I ever saw an original come loose.

Thank you too everyone who got in touch in relation to the hub cap emblems.

I have now sourced a set, looking forward to seeing them on the car.
