356C Front Disc Brake Seal Orientation

#1 Post by Dave Hegeman »

I'm putting the front brakes back together on my 1964 C.

The old seals were rubber with a coil spring insert in the inner side. The new seals, below, are different.

Do these new version seals install with the rounded, darker brass shaded side towards the bearing, and the side with the seam around the circumference towards the backing plate, or the opposite?

Thanks for your advice!

The hollow side is toward the bearing. Jürgen

Thanks, Jurgen. My problem is both sides are metal enclosed, neither appears to be the "hollow" side.

If there is a lip, it would face the lubricant. In other words, it would point toward the lube.
Pressure, if any, would force the lip to seal more firmly. Turned the wrong way, the lip would lift and allow lube to leak past the seal.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Dave, The lip may be hidden because the spring may reduce its diameter. Try a plastic pic and feel around inside one of the sides, one side should show the spring. That's the side to the lubricant (bearing). Jürgen Good Luck

Upon removing a front drum recently I found the spring mangled and hanging out of the seal. I simply discarded the spring. The seal (first installed new two years ago) seems as tight on the spindle surface as before, judging by the effort required to pop it back onto the spindle.
