6 Volt CDI unit mounting

#61 Post by Tom Wavrin »

I'm enclosing photos of a mounting placement for a Winterburn CDI. 1/4 inch aluminum. Follows Jay Broemmel's original idea and his help.

If anyone wants to make one of these, that Aluminium angle doesn’t exist in the wild. It starts off as a piece of 4”x8”x1/4” rectangle tube that, through a mildly sketchy table saw operation, gets turned into two 3 5/8” x8” x1/4”angles. Tom’s car is a notch and mine is a cab so the hinge sits closer to the motor. My only complaint about this unit is that the wires aren’t quite long enough. I would gladly pay an extra five dollars for another foot of wire on all the leads and not have to splice stuff. Otherwise I love the CDI. Car runs better, more power, seems like it’s getting better mileage. 2500 miles and no problems. When I was looking for a non-resistor rotor, people were trying to talk me out of it and I’m glad I didn’t listen. Fred is also preposterously helpful with questions about the install. :D

Jay, which non-resistor rotor did you use? I see several on the aircooled.net site.

For the BR18 it’s this:
http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Bosch-04-0 ... dified.htm
They modify them in house. Had to wait a few weeks for them to do a batch. They don’t do Porsche part numbers. You have to give them the Bosch # for your distributor. 04-???

Thanks. Nice job on the brackets.
That rotor appears to fit my 022 distributor too.

6 Volt CDI units?

#66 Post by Tom Wavrin »

Jay,
The wires were long enough on my Winterburn CDI to reach the coil and distributor without modification on my Hardtop. I did add a short piece of green wire to the distributor in order to coil it for an original-like look. I suspect more green wire would be needed regardless if mounted as we did on a Coupe. I did not have to wait at all for the non-resistor rotor from Air Cooled for use with the BR18 and got the rotor within a week of placing my order. I am running NGK iridium BPR6iX plugs and Bosch wires and am using an NOS yellow wire Bosch condenser and it remains attached to be able to switch to the standard Kettering ignition in the unlikely event the CDI fails. I agree that Fred Winterburn is very helpful and promptly responds when questioned.

I also only had to extend the green one, but if you did this with a coupe you’d probably have to extend them all. Forgot to mention earlier that you also need to get longer hinge bolts to get through the bracket.

That bracket really looks professional, so I won't show you the bracket I made to replace a broken transmission mount on my Morgan :D With regard to the wire lengths, it is too late for the batch (five 6V units) I am working on now, but I will make them longer on the following batch next fall. (will 32 inches be enough?) I'm also going to stop using PVC wire and move exclusively to cross linked polyethylene wire (XLPE). I've been wiring the inside of the boxes with that type of wire for some time now. There have been no problems with the PVC insulation, but this wire is better in the long run. Fred

6 Volt CDI units?

#69 Post by Tom Wavrin »

Fred, I think 12 inches extra wire would suffice. In my case 6 inches on the green wire only.

Jay, I used the original bolts on my installation. But, I changed out the split lock washers for wavy ones and exchanged the thicker washer under the rear bolt head for a thinner one to allow for the thickness of the ring connector on the black ground wire. The nuts are flush with the end of the bolt.

I mounted mine to a bracket under the voltage regulator but it is kind of hidden. I kind of like the way it sits more in the open on your bracket. Now to find some rectangular aluminum.

Considering this set-up for one of my 4-cams based on a friends recommendation. Does anybody have experience in mounting these under the passenger floorboard? An out of sight mounting would be critical for me

I found a couple more of these angle pieces under a table at the shop. If anyone wants to make a bracket like Tom’s let me know. $10 each plus shipping. J
