Ok! I have the rack mounted! Two new issues, however. First, the rack does not sit perfectly centered across the twin grills. It is like the holes in the rack are the correct distance apart, but too far to the right. Secondly, the "fins" on the grill must be bent to accommodate the mounting bolts going through them. Is this common? Thanks for all the help!

I am looking to install a Lietz luggage rack on my 65 SC and one set of holes appears to be off the second set of holes in the deck lid appear to have metal plugs in them with no apparent way to take them out. They have teeth on the plug as well as the bracket. Any suggestions?

The original plugs were plastic and the edges are serrated. Perhaps they are painted body color.

The plugs will pry out, they are normally plastic from the paint shop. You will probably need to remove the grill to get something thin under the cap. Mine is too wide, you need to bend a couple fins to make it fit.

The mounting stand offs on my deck lid were slightly off as well. I managed to tweak them so I could mount a rack.

The holes aligned correctly on mine, a Karmann car.

My car is also Karmann-bodied with the original deck lid. Probably some previous unknown damage or an assembly after the beer break?
