VW or late B 356?

#1 Post by ron herrin »

I have 4 rims that are for a drum brake car but are stamped 11/64 are they VW or could they be for a late B 356? Thanks

VW wide 5 rims are solid while the Porsche's had the ventilation holes. VW did not get the ventilation holes until the 4 lug wheels in 1967.

Actually 66-67 VW had wide 5 similar to Porsche (with vent holes) but the rim had several bumps around the hub cap area instead of clips. They held on the outside lip of the hubcap, but on a part that didn't show as it was set into the whell.

I bought a rim at a garage sale some years ago. A good friend (who has a long history with 356) was with me and we were glad to find at least one piece from Porsche among the parts. Later I discovered the logo (VW) was painted over quite well and the "nubs" that hold the VW hubcap to the wheel were very carefully ground off and a set of clips were riveted in such a neat manner that it created a nearly perfect Porsche wheel--until you compare the vents side by side. Those '66/'67 wheels can make a good imitation. Adam, I have that wheel in the barn stash if you're interested.

I have seen a number of 356 wide 5 wheels made by Lemmerz with very late dates, always assumed they were aftermarket wheels, or perhaps spare parts from Porsche.

Could you post a picture? There were some later year replacement wheels that were 4 1/2 wide but assembled with more offset towards the outside. They look different enough to spot without measuring.

They are probably post production rims, not sure if aftermarket or Porsche, are they made by lemmerz or KPZ? One factoid about the later wheels is while they are still 4.5 the off-set is different so compared to a production 4.5 wheel they look like a 5.5. I have one of these on my car, it is dated 67.
If you could post a pic it would help.
Ignore the hub cap.
