Looking for the elusive transmission tools

#1 Post by Jason Eastman »

I'm sure I know the answer but I'll ask anyway. Does anyone know where I can find the factory tools to perform the differential setup and shift fork adjustments for the 356 transmission?

You don't need the shift fork adjustment tool. It is only meant to hold the ends of the shift rails. The rails are held firmly enough by the intermediate plate. Actual adjustment is done by "eye".

Jon Bunin; you have all the tools. Do you have any extras to help out Jason?

I'm not sure what tool 289 is jaque. I found this site and didn't see it listed on there. http://derwhites356literature.com/356Po ... Tools.html
I'm still trolling the internet looking for what it is.
As for renting, I appreciate the offer but I'm looking to purchase the tools so I can service these transmissions through my shop.

Hi Jason go to Samba it is a VW tool http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/tools3.php since they used the same cases you can make it work unless you are in a country that does not have any experienced builders you might serve your customers better by sending the work to experts that have the tools parts etc.

Jacques,

Jason is a new member who has a shop in northwest Vermont that is specializing in Porsche engine and transmission rebuilds. He's looking to purchase some special tools so he can do everything in-house so I doubt he wants to farm out any of the work.

And Merry Christmas to you Jacques, my fellow Jesuit High grad. AMDG.

Your absolutely correct Sebastian. Being my brother is an accomplished machinist, what I can't find he can make if I can get accurate drawings or measurements. One way or the other I'll eventually acquire the tools but I'd rather just find them then make them though

Transmissions are the only mechanical thing we send out. But we are here in So. Cal. and have a couple of great shops that offer good service, good prices, and are close by. And because they specialize in Porsche/VW, they have many parts on hand. Except the tall fourth gears which we source from Vic. Come to think of it, we get other stuff from him we can't find too.

After a fifty plus year love affair with these cars, you and Vic astound me with this knowledge Jacques.

I have a VW289D, P68 and P55 (2 pieces) that I am thinking of selling but not sure of a price. Would appreciate opinions on fair (both ways) prices.
Thanks
