Repair Shops is Northern California

#1 Post by Steve Douglas »

I have recently been hearing from local (Northern California) members that there aren't many shops left that know 356/912 mechanicals, several have closed or have new owners who don't know the old cars. I do have a "short" list of shops, but looking to expand it to share with members. Looking for ones that can do Tune-ups, Brakes and Suspension. Once the list is updated I will post it, any suggestions will help, thanks.

I take my 356 and 911 to Post Auto, (955 Post Street, San Francisco). Frank Wong, the owner, worked as a mechanic for Carlsen Porsche when it was in San Francisco. John, the younger manager at Post Auto, also has extensive experience with Porsches.

Repair Shops in Northern California
I have gotten a great start to a list of shops that may have 356 experience. I want to thank those who contributed, more than 30 replied. I am hoping that this will be a continuously growing list with contributions from local members. This list only offers the contact information, no recommendations, criticism, or issues are considered. That is up to the individual to do research, find out what fits their needs. One must remember it’s not 1970 anymore, and we are driving obsolete cars, that require ancient procedures. No computer to tell what’s broken, knowledge is important with our cars, many have never had to learn the basics or have forgotten them dealing with modern cars.

Steve,
I had Bill Eason ( http://easonauto.com/ ) do some service on my C. There was a minor mistake, but it was corrected with a smile.
He's on the other end of the bridge, but with SF traffic, the trip is not any longer than it was taking me to get to The Stable.

Great that you are putting this together in one place Steve. I golfed in Gilroy last year. Tough Johnny Miller course. Tough for my handicap anyway.

Steve this is really great. I started writing down all of your information and realized that maybe you already have it in some form that we could copy. I'm sure that a number of other people would love to get this information even if its a little ways outside of our areas. For example I know that both you and I go to Ron's Transaxels yet we live 40-80 miles away. By the way I highly recommend Ron's Transaxels.

Thanks Jerry Landes

Deutsche Motor Sport in Concord CA is now owned by Kirk Patterson. Kirk had been doing a large portion of the work for Tom in recent years. Kirk did most of the work on my 63 356 Cab and brought the car back to life, rebuilt the engine, brakes etc etc. So Deutsche Motor Sport is under new ownership but Kirk is a continuation of the quality of the work from this shop.

Best to All.

The Stable is now again open. I have not yet been there to speak with the owners/mechanics. If I get a chance soon, I will. If anyone else does, please let us know.
To be clear, who took over ownership of the operation when Allen left is none of my business so I make no comment regarding that or any financial issues.
Brian and George remained there after Allen turned it over. If either of them is there, it's worth a look.
Added by edit: Steve, a standing O! Nice job to free-lance the solution to questions many have had. And I don't think I've publicly thanked him for giving me a hand at the '16 Lit Meet, so I'll take the opportunity:
Thanks, Steve!

Reviving this with new info.
Spoke with Allen yesterday and he says the facility now in The Stable's location is pretty much a generic auto repair service; take your Toyota there.
But he also suggested AVR Service, 824 Ellis St. 415-474-0600; they had some decent 356 wrenches.

More new info, San Francisco.
George (the guy Allen had been training on 356s) is now working at Pacific Motors, at 1700 Pine St (the former Stable facility). Phone 415-252-8660.
I have not been there, but between he, Allen and one or two other guys who worked there, they are the only ones other than me who ever worked on my 356s.
