Scam in Classifieds?

#1 Post by JohnPierce »

A new member to the forum is selling a pristine 1965 911 for $48,000. Seller is in FL. The car has a Sonauto badge.

Sounds like a scam. Thoughts?

I agree... looks like a scam. "needs full restoration" but the car looks perfect...

Couldn't find the ad. But there is a fairly large group of 356er's in the Sunshine state if future detective work is needed.

That was a sweet looking car though in Irish Green!! With a sunroof and from Sonauto too :)

I emailed the seller asking for the COA, but he never responded.

I replied to the seller saying that I'd take it and he called me pretty quickly. Asian accent but decent English. Said the car was in CO, he owned it 12 years but it needed an engine rebuild and a 'new' transmission. I mentioned the excellent photos and he said they were taken 3 years ago. When I asked where he got it he got vague and the phone went dead. When I returned the call that the ID showed it turned out to not be a good number. Never got to the deposit request or any other indication that he had a method to get money out of my pocket. I can't believe this really works. Let's be careful out there. KTF

There is a 1965-built 1966 911 recently posted in the Registry classifieds for just $26,500.

"Missing motor, transmission and interior."

In this case, the price isn't too good to be true.

If this were over at the Early 911S Registry we'd be talking about how it's an early model year '66 and yet it:
  1. Has 2 screw horn grills (ok, it doesn't have any horn grills but the tabs are for 2 screws),
  2. Has wider 911S bumper decos,
  3. Has rubber pads o the bumper horns (supposedly available from October 1965 but that chassis # should be sooner).
