Hello
I'm having my trusted mechanic replace the ring & pinion and adjacent bearings. While the engine is down, I'm also having him pull the heads off for a health check; I suspect some valve guides and/or seals might be worn and this is causing some oil consumption. No need for a full tranny rebuild as the shifting is good.
While doing the above, is there anything else one should check? I'm thinking oil pump gears, pushrod tubes (I think I'm still running originals, touch wood no leaks so far), fan blades...I know the list could go on, but open to hearing what's sensible from a preventative maintenance point of view.
This is for a 1962 T6 1600S with the small oil pump.
Cheers
Maurice

A 1962 should have the large pump.
And replacing the ring and pinion requires a complete dis-assembly of the gear cluster; so it's getting a full rebuild anyway.

Neil, thanks I had seen that thread.
Vic, you're right and it's like opening a Pandora's box. Your suggestion has got me thinking about a full rebuild...

...now would be a good time to address the ring gear attach bolts, and magnaflux the carrier for cracks...
I had one fail in about '66, in my '57 coupe, an experience I'll never forget. The attendant repair was huge for a starving college student facing Lyndon Johnson's military draft, but I got it done with a used R&P from the dealership service manager... Vic has written about this many times in the past...
