Flywheel Gland Nuts and Their Correct Torque

#1 Post by Paul Ahnell »

I have two questions:
#1. What is the correct torque for a 1600 Normal flywheel gland nut?

Page E68 of Workshop Manual says 254 to 268 ft-lbs.
Page E105 (Summary of torque values) says 254 to 272 ft-lbs
The Maestro in his Secrets of the Inner Circle says 400 ft-lbs.
In this Forum I've seen various from 350 to 400 ft-lbs.

Why the disparity from the Workshop Manual? (OK I guess I really have 3 questions)

#2. What's the "best" (i.e. screw it in finger tight then torque it and forget it) garden-variety flywheel gland nut? I've seen discussions here about SCAT, Stoddard, and other nuts, with their pros and cons. Looking for a "no hassles/surprises" stock nut.

Thanks

Plus, 356 Spec Book says: 253 to 271 ft lbs
912 Spec Book says 325 to 361 ft lbs

So, is the answer: the more torque, the better?

Richard Miller did a strenght analysis of the thin wall bolt and he believed that the Maestro's excessive torque recommendation could produce a failure. i would not exceed 375 ft lbs unless you use a better material or a different design that has more wall.

My Porsche Spec book says that the 325 to 361 ft. Lbs. is for the 1600 S-90, 1600 SC and the 912. In doing a search, I found the following, which I could not find on the SCAT website:

"SCAT Chromoly Gland Nut & Washer, Porsche 356 and 912, 1 1/2" Head, 60912 is a fantastic Gland Nut that uses a stock 36mm Head Socket. Super strong 4340 Chromoly steel billet that is precision machined on CNC equipment. Comes with OEM style pilot shaft bearing for long life. This gland nut has a thicker cross section for added strength, and the larger than stock bolt head gives maximum surface area and even clamping pressure on the flywheel when tightening. We torque these to 400lb/ft." It's likely that's where the 400 ft. lbs. came from.

Thanks for those comments. Didn't I read that some folks have had problems trying to get the SCAT gland nut started on the threads?
