Generator light on question

#1 Post by Mark Pribanic »

I just replaced the Voltage regulator and replaced the generator with one rebuilt and one new unit and the generator light is still on. What am I missing? Gotta be something simple.

Thank you in advance!

Did you polarize the generator?

Nope, trying that now. Have never done that on the past. Connect the generator post DF to VR D+?

Take off fan belt; D+ to 12V for a second. Generator should spin clockwise. Done.

What do you mean to 12v. To the hot terminal of the battery?

Well Mark that would suggest you have an error somewhere, in the wiring or the either the new gen or reg. Suggest you look closely at the wiring diagram in the shop Then with Volt-Ohm meter in hand check the gen and reg.(disconnected ta D+& B+) for shorts.

From the current issue of the 356 Registry magazine!
If you wire your generator like the picture, it should motor - with the fan belt removed.
If not, something isn't right in the generator

Thank you Vic, Larry & Greg! Greg, that illustration is perfect! I have the original Bosch and the 1st replacement with me at work. Going to take them to a alt/gen shop to test them. I will polarize the 2nd replacement this evening when I get home from werk! Will keep everyone posted what I find out.

FWIW and I expect you've tried it, but are the brushes nicely formed to the commutator and making good contact. If they stick, you get sparks and a generator light. This is common to this new to Porsche person.

K, Got it sorted! Here is my theory. Genny went bad & blew out the VR. When I got back to Florida from Cali I replaced the VR thinking that would solve the issue. Idiot light was blown out too. Replaced the Idiot light bulb, Genny light was burning bright. Replaced the genny with 3 rebuilt Bosch ones, but since the VR was replaced 3 weeks ago, thought it was a genny issue. Replaced my 3 week old VR with a new one and the Idiot light went out. Viola! Thank you all who helped!
