356 muffler options?

#1 Post by tom collingwood »

I have a patina 55 speedster with a fully rebuilt 56 1600 engine.

Looking for a muffler that looks and sounds great.
Not looking for concours.

What is the go-to muffler sound good/look good?

Im open to used as well.

If Dansk makes a muffler for your car, avoid it like the plague!!! I have a Dansk on my 356 coupe and while I did not have the fitment nightmares about which others here have posted, constant cracking of the welds was/is an ongoing problem. The Roadster that I gave my son has a Leistritz muffler--total gravy if you can find one. Forget the sound, cars that backfire from leaks due to exhaust system cracks are generally not a joy to drive or be around--don't ask me how I know.

Take a look at these, I have the 356 B/C version on my cabriolet. It fits perfectly and sounds great without any kind of droning. I actually wrote a little blurb that was published in the magazine about the sound, fit and finish I was so impressed with it. I've had it on the car for 9 or 10 years now and it still looks, sounds and performs like new.

Not cheap but you won't have any headaches or complaints. There are two versions of the twin pipe for 356A:

And one Abarth style like Jules mentioned:

Sebastian, are those the ones that are made in Taiwan? I remember some stainless steel mufflers from Taiwan, forgot the brand.

I was going to suggest to look at Vintage Speed in Taiwan the quality of these exhausts is quite amazing, all the welds are made using computer TIG welding and they look and sound great. They were at the 356 Swap Meet a few years back showing their product under the tent and I was very impressed..

356 Exhausts are here: https://store.vintagespeed.com.tw/Class ... -c33996821
I think they ship direct to the US and also have local distributors..

on the cost - keep in mind those from Conceptone atre in Canadian $$ so your US dollar is about 1.3 X more ( so actial cost would be about 30% less in UDS.
there are two products - the vintage speed is one and the other is GDC or something like that.. the GDC is of a higher quality thtan the other.

most imprtantly is that some fit a T1 A or a 55 and Most do not..
check that they fit..

Hi Jim,

Good info, thanks. Yes, they are less expensive when converting, I bought mine almost a decade ago and I remember it t be under $1,000 US shipped and as I said it has been worth every penny (I bought the GDP version). As for the fit of an earlier car I cannot say one way or another as my cab is a C.

Old news.

I am certainly no fan of most Dansk products I have purchased over the years. They were usually bought because there were no other viable options. Doors, fenders, mufflers all had to be reworked to fit or function, some extensively. Some could not feasibly be adjusted to work at all.

Dansk recently did a redesign on their 356 mufflers and the two I've installed fit perfectly and have had no issues in over a year and a few hundred miles. They are easily identified by the four braces that have been added to where the pipes attach to the muffler. I've included a picture of them below. Sorry it's not a better picture - it's obviously on a car.

I also bought a Dansk T6 gas tank last month and it fits perfectly and has had no issues. I've added a picture of it installed too. It's in a 1962 so it's supposed to be black, but they also offer it in gray. I'm still debating whether to put the black tar pad on the top.

Hopefully they are now making an effort to provide decent products?
