1952 brakes

#1 Post by Joris Koning »

I am helping a friend return his 52 interim bumper car back to original. Over the years the car has lost its breakdrums. It would have come with the VW drums wit the pressed on alloy cooling fins. Does anybody out there have a set they can take some pictures off for me? I am looking for the VW part number of the drums and would like to learn a bit more about the backing plates.

Many thanks,

Joris

Joris, if you can get a hold of Tom Birch he can tell you all about the brake drums you are looking for....Years ago he showed me several sets and explained how they were designed. Good Luck and I enjoy your articles in the Registry magazine.....Mark...

One thing I find intresting about the use of the VW drums is the wheels didnt have the acess hole for brake adjustment till they went with the aluminum drums.

Hi Guys,

Excuse my late reply. Been working hard on my upcoming registry article and getting some fuel issues fixed on the 911.

Trevor, we are going to order the rings, the challenge is to figure out which drums to get. I do not know anything about VW's and the more I try and figure this thing out the more confusing it gets.

Tony, thank you so much for the pictures, very interesting. I was under the impression that the drum would have the early VW part number 111 501 615 for rear drums and 111 405 615 for front drums. Yours does not. In addition, this http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ ... id=1897830 front drum has the same style marking as yours. Is the 23 41 52 1 number seen in Tony's drum a VW part number??

Tony, could you possibly also gt me some good detail shots of the backing plates used and the wheel cylinders?

Many thanks for all your help,

Joris

Joris

Here are some more pictures. I had assumed that the rings just pressed over the drum but it
Looks like the drum might have to be turned down on the outer diameter to accecpt the ring. From the outer appearences the drums look close to or the same as whats on my 60 beetle.

Let me know i can send more pictures.

Well, I think I have the drum part figured out. VW changed the part numbering methodology in 1955. The numbers seen in Tony's drums are the pre '55 VW part numbers.

Tony, thanks for the additional pictures. Can you tell if the backing plates are modified VW or Porsche? Also can you identify the wheel cylinders? Last cheeky question, those drums and backing plates would not happen to be for sale?

Thanks,

Joris
