Engine ID needed
I'm trying to ID an engine and it's parts. I have the third piece that tells me that it's a '62 super (700799) but I'm not sure if the case belongs to this 3 rd piece. The case is stamped 616/12. Maestros Book of Secrets lists a few of these case numbers in the back as '62-'63 supers. Can anyone confirm if I'm on the right track? KTF

Engine ID needed

Your engine case and 3rd piece should all have the same 3 digit "matching numbers" stamped in them, if they did come from the same engine. The engine number is, indeed, a 62 Super engine number that was produced sometime in late 1961. It should and does have a 616/12 designation. The late Maestro read all that info right out of the factory spec book. All this info came from the same source as the Maestro used.

You're on the right track. 616/12 and 700799 are both '62-'63 Super numbers, probably produced in late '61 or early '62. Some other things to look for:
1) Are the match numbers on the two halves and the 3rd piece all the same? If so, you've probably got a case that's all together. If not... well... it's not... I've found these stamped on pads on the top of the 3rd piece just to the left of the generator stand, on the top of the right case half near the flywheel end, and on top of the left case half at either the pulley end or the flywheel end (this end more likely on 912 engines).
2) What is the case number, which is stamped on the boss that mates up with the one stamped 616/12? From Harry's list, 700773 has a case number of 67270. If the two halves match, your case number should be pretty close to this one.

Re: Engine ID needed
Drat! Jim beat me again! Probably 'cuz I had to go to the garage to verify match number locations, crawling under a workbench with a flashlight to look at a spare 912 engine. I don't think I'm ever gonna beat that 2-legged reference book on the draw...Jim Breazeale wrote:Your engine case and 3rd piece should all have the same 3 digit "matching numbers" stamped in them, if they did come from the same engine.
