New Fuel tank For 356B
I am looking for some advice regarding the purchase of a new fuel tank. I have a bottom sender tank in my 1962 T6 356B coupe, which needs replacing. I will replace it with a new top sender tank and sender unit. Since there are several manufacturers, any advice about one tank fitting better than another? Also, is there a particular sender unit that will cohabitate well with my original fuel gauge? I have read comments about reverse gauge readings etc., Thanks in advance.

Bottom sender gauges look like the attached. Assuming you have this gauge you will have to send it to one of our Vendors to be changed to top sender to work.

Thanks Doug, yep, that's the gauge in my car. I will contact the instrument rebuilders for an estimate.

Rick,
I had to replace the bottom sender on my 62 as it sat for years and not much was left. The sender was replaced by a similar one and had to have the gauge recalibrated. Works great. North Hollywood Speedometer did the work.

I put one of these in my BT5 Roadster. Perfect fit and it looks terrific: http://www.restoration-design.com/store/product/PP166
And I put one of these in for the fuel level sender: http://www.partdeal.com/vdo-sender-fuel ... 6-001.html
Works perfectly. I checked my gauge to be sure this sender was correct: Gauge shows full with sender at 180 ohms, shows empty with sender at 10 ohms.

I don't mean to divert the thread, but have a question for Bob. What was your original gauge doing wrong with the new sender? I just replaced my sender on 62 coupe also and am now wondering if it's recording properly or not. Thanks, Mark

Paul, Does the Alas sender work with both 6 and 12 volt? How well does it fit the 5 holes?

Re: New Fuel tank For 356B
The hole pattern is an exact match to our tanks. The sender is just a variable resistor, so as long as you choose a resistance range that matches your gauge, the voltage is not important. I bought a variable resistor (potentiometer) of the range 0-1000 ohms and temporarily hooked it up where the sender would go and adjusted it to find "Full" and "Empty". The senders come in many versions, but, not surprisingly for VDO, there was an exact match available.

Mark,
The new sender was not as long and didn't show the amount of fuel in the first half tank with the same detail. I took longer for the needle to move off of full.

If you read the OWNERS MANUAL you will see on the T-6 cars a full tank will not register movement off of full for 4 or 5 gallons. It's in the book. That's the way it works, as long as empty reads empty you are good to go.

You can put a resistor between the tank and gage and calibrate it your self on the + side of the gage.

Re: New Fuel tank For 356B
Thanks everyone for the input. I did order a new Dansk tank and it just arrived. I also talked to one of the instrument repair venders. They gave me a price of $175 to update the fuel gauge to match a top loader sender. I found a top loader sender in one of the boxes I got with the car. I will test the ohm range on it. thanks again.
