air condioning

#1 Post by John Beckius »

I have a client with a 1965 356SC that would like our shop to install air conditioning on the car. does anyone know of any aftermarket kits available for this or who might have parts for this?

The only problem I see with their install is the compressor mounts backwards. This causes the compressor to run bacwards in rotation. I always thought compressors did not like to run in reverse.
Here is my mount.

Jim, ..are you going to the Helen event?
I'd love to see either of those set ups, especially the Pre A one.

Steve, nope not gonna make it. I sold the Pre-A almost 10 years ago (wow time flies). The slate grey car is a sunroof SC owned by Leonard Scrantz. He will be in Helen but will be in the speedster I restored. The SC will be staying back here in Louisiana. Both cars I hid the A/C system behind the back seat and it blows the cold air forward. A little unconventional but still works good and is less intrusive to the originality of the car (very little cutting of the factory sheet metal).

Hi Jim
I like your set up...I am wanting to install ac in my B coupe
Do you know how much power the compress uses?
Where did you install the condenser coil?
Where did you get the parts?
Thanks
Greg

Has anyone seen what a Prius or the like uses? They're hoarding every electron they can and they also share a very small cabin to cool; I wonder if the compressor isn't both smaller and more efficient.
OK, this is a whole lot of fun, trying to avoid copyrighted images, so we'll try once again.
Turns out the Prius compressor is electrically driven (from Bing and I hope *THIS* one isn't copyrighted)

Several thing are obvious:
If you're gonna AC your 356, changing to 12V isn't an issue.
You can put it where you want it rather than hanging more weight out the back.
That largely empty volume around the steering gear sure looks tempting and it means short hoses, too.
What I can't tell is the KW load to run the thing; the wires need a closer look.

I'll bet that would bring a 356 generator to its knees in a moment!

The prius compressor runs off 206volts ac. They have a dc to ac volt inverter. Not gonna happen in our cars.

Ron,
That electric compressor is what I was thinking about, but I'm having a hard time finding info.
It would be nice not to rob power from the engine and like you say could be mounted outside the engine bay.
So if a 12v generator couldn't supply enough power, I wonder if an alternator can!

Google ES18 electric compressor. Thats what the prius uses, as I stated above, don't see how you could get it to work.
