B/C manual reprint -Am I missing the main contents/index?

#1 Post by Harold Singh »

I notice that most folks here are able to refer people right to the correct page. While I have an individual section index for each area, I do not have an over all contents page that would narrow it down to a section and there is no overall index in the back for looking up items.

What am I missing? Did everyone else just mark the sections? How can I use the manual more efficiently?

Harold,
I have a repro from Charlie White and I have the same problem. I started putting paper tabs with the topic at the top of each section, but like you said a table of contents would be nice.

Well I guess that means some helpful fellow (with more time than me) will need to work on that contents page!

The overall contents page is on the E tab (very first one) and may not be all that helpful since it just gives the section descriptions. For example the first two listings are :
E Engine and clutch
F Fuel system,
etc.

The section index (in my manual) is the one that gives page numbers-for example, "Group E, engine and Clutch
Engine description page E1
Operations 1EN Removing and installing engine page E5
ditto, 2EN Disassembling and assembling engine page E7,

etc .
Maybe you've got all there is to get. Tom

Harold & Don, Bill Romano has gone through the trouble of converting the B/C manual into a searchable PDF. Very useful. You can contact him via RESOURCES > VENDORS above. Worth having. You can then print out any pages you want out in the shop.

Tom each section has an index but, it would be nice to have one overall contents page prior. What I mean is 5-6 pages that list every section in the whole book. I guess I could copy those and add them at the beginning. The pages you mention do not have section T for example. You'd have to find the front of that section individually. This is probably because these may have started in individual binders that were labeled? Now the reprint is all together? I don't know. It's just not as user friendly as some other manuals I've had. I'll see about the searchable PDF. That may turn out to be much quicker for locating items.

Thanks all,
Harold

Harold: Remember this is a manual that originated in 1954 by a very small company and written originally in German-what you see is what you get. The electronic version will naturally be much more searchable. Tom

When these manuals were written they were for use by trained master mechanics. Porsche as well as all other companies assumed you had some training.

Many years ago, I put into the tech articles an article about tech pubs and how to read them p,U.S. The final configuration of each manual. Through out their lives, Porsche updated all manuals with supplements and additions. Some additions were multiple pages.

Not a big deal I guess. I have no trouble using the manual when I get to the correct page. I may break them up into individual 3 ring binders for each section or add tabs.
