Areojet Sports Car Club of Sacremento 1959?

#1 Post by John Kiely »

Hi,

I am a brand new 58' Speedster owner. I am thrilled about this car. My car is a very original two owner, black plate, matching numbers car.

There is a dash plaque on it that reads, " Areojet Sports Car Club, Sacremento. Second Annual Rocket Rally, November 22, 1959, 1st Place."

Does this club or event ring a bell with anyone?

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

John

Hey Doug,
Thank you for responding. I found that as well, where I learned that it is a two day event from Sacremento to Reno and return. I also found the articles of incorporation for the club which no longer exists and has no known address or name associated with it.
Outside of those facts , I'm in the dark. Thanks again for your help!

The proper spelling is Aerojet Sports Car Club. Aerojet had a plant in Rancho Cordova, just east of Sacramento. Some employees there started a sports car club to go along with the many other clubs in the Sacramento area. Most put on time-and-distance and gimmick rallies and some also got into autocrossing. The peak time for these clubs was mid to late '50s through late 60's and possibly later. I have a dash plaque in my collection of awards that is from an ASCC rally on July 17, 1964. If I can find a way to get a decent photo of it I'll post it.

This thread should probably be moved to Off Topic, although we did win that rally in a '64 356C.

Cheers,
Wes

Thanks for that info. My bad on the spelling typo. And I further apologize for where this is posted. This is my first time using this forum and I'm still trying to get the hang of it. Thanks again.

Here's a photo of that plaque. It would be interesting to know if the logo that they used on it is the same as your older one.

Yes, the logo is exactly the same. My plate appears to be a single piece of brass that is engraved. Very hard to read.

It's between Sacramento and Sacremento. I spent a week out there one night.

Was Aerojet misspelled on their original logo? Looks like it.

Nope. The rocket scientists and engineers knew how to spell their employer's name. Look more closely at the logo on the plaque. (You might have to "save" the image and then make it larger to really see it. The lack of good resolution on the logo at first makes it appear as if it might be misspelled.) I've checked the real thing here with a magnifying lens.

John, you had no idea this thread would take on the life it did........ There were quite a few 356s running in events around Sacramento and the Bay Area back in the day. The odometer running off the left front wheel seemed to give better accuracy on T&D events, so there were a lot of converts for that one reason alone. Once hooked on a 356, always hooked on one.

Cheers,
Wes
