Novice question on brake assembly

#1 Post by James Fitzsimons »

Hi all,

Novice question, but I can't find anything in the workshop manual or the Elfrink book, so thought I'd check here.

Should I be putting any thread lock or similar on the screw fitting on the connecting tube where it goes into the banjo bolts?

Perhaps a smear of neversieze but no sealing compound of any kind is necessary.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

No thread sealer needed because it's not the threads doing the sealing, its the tube flare.

Brake fittings are remarkably easy to mess up the hex when you use a standard open end wrench, I like to use the special 5 sided wrenches designed just for tube fittings.....sorry I forgot what they are called but they really help avoid damaging the fitting.

They're usually called Flare Wrenches by most folks. They sort of "lock" around the fitting and are really useful in not rounding off the fittings. A good investment in any tool collection, even if you don't use them once a year or less.

+1 Steve and Tom.
Those things turn what is a 50/50 chance of really making a mess (like having to make a new hard line) into a routine job.

+1, in fact, I bought a new one for my last flex line change, so it would fit tighter,

Thanks guys,

I'll get one of these since I need to do the whole car. It'll be nice to know I have less chance of screwing something up!

Cheers!
