#1 Post by Jason Guild »

Are the garnish rails for a convertible d the same as one used on a coupe without vent window?

Jason -

As I recall from doing mine 20 years ago or so, they are not exactly the same, but I only had one D garnish rail and couldn't find one for the other side. I compared the one I had to a coupe rail and found that if I cut a notch in the coupe rail it fit just like a D rail. When you cover the rail with vinyl, you can't tell the difference between them. I looked at mine today and can't tell which is a D and which is a coupe.

Hope this helps.

No. And different end shapes. Stoddard has them.

By garnish rails do you mean the outer chrome strip, or the interior door top trim?

Dan

Is there anyway you can show me how you had to notch it to fit properly? A photo if at all possible.

Thanks in advance

Jason, I still don't know which part you are talking about. Here's an illustration of door top parts. Please indicate what part you are talking about. All parts with a reference number are available from stock.

It would seem that he means the un-numbered part pictured just below #54

Jason -

I went out to the cold and dark garage and took some pictures. The tan garnish rail is in my Conv D. The black one is in my '59 coupe. The black makes details hard to see, but I think you can see where the coupe rail has a rounded off complete looking end while the D rail has a notch taken out to fit around the top of the door jamb. I'm not sure why they did it like this, but there it is. Probably something to do about weathertightness (?!).

Sorry for the sorry quality, but this shows an original never molested Drauz roadster. The overall length of the painted A Coupe garnish cover is the same length; obviously the ends are different as is the inside flange that fits over the top inside of the door. Both can be modified.

At the top door end itself, there is no rule of thumb on how it is shaped, it's length or depth.

Taken this morning, hope it helps.
