Super 90 engine

#1 Post by Mark James Ready »

Just got a 62 B T6 Coupe with Super 90 engine. Today actually. Australian delivered RHD.
Very short single drive today to drop off at storage.
Sweet ride. Started first time . Smooth acceleration. Light clutch with easy gear change.
Not idling.
Any forum tips on Super 90 engines appreciated

MEMORIZE: and arrange every piece of paper that deals with the car. Then copy them. Put the originals away keep the copies nearby. If you are going to have the car serviced get reviews from other members who have work done at the shops that pass inspection (read know what they are talking about). al zim
Some of the posts indicate that you have a strong mechanical knowledge and the tools to fix the car. Where did that come from? I have been around 356 cars for 61 years and still learn things every day.

check the points gap first and reset the dwell to 50 degrees and see if it then idles, someone could have left the key on and slightly burned the points. THEN check each cylinder to make sure it is firing. THAT will be a good start

You need a baseline. Do a full tuneup starting with valve adjustment. Touching carbs last Here is a video for adjusting Solex 40PII carbs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THh9ajt ... H&index=42

There are also a number of web articles on tune up topics, found on the technical page of the main website.

Has it been sitting? Could be your idle jets are plugged

Would have sitting in auction house for at least a month.
Had an online auction, which was open for a month prior to a week of bidding then another week till we sorted out price

Doubtful then... did you try to adjust the idle with the screws?

If it has Solex Carbs - you could have an air leak around the bushings. Mine did - it couldn't hold an idle speed. I sent the carbs off to 356 Carburetor Rescue (Sedona, AZ, USA), for a rebuild, and they have been terrific ever since. Best money I ever spent on the Tub.

Were I to acquire another 356, I would change all the fluids and filter, adjust the brakes and clutch, then do a full tune up including new points and plugs.
The S90 engine is unique in that it has a 55mm main bearing in #1 unique flywheel shims and a unique flywheel. Presumably Porsche went back to the 50mm #1 because the S90 has less thrust bearing area-so don't ride the clutch. But you knew that anyway. The S90 has the largest intake valves of any 356, and neat black cylinder heads.
The tune up will probably enable the engine to idle as it should, but if not, then is the time to look for trouble with intake leaks or distributer problems. The 356 idle is temperature sensitive, RPM increasing as engine temperature rises. I use the hand throttle in my 356As to warm up the engine so that I can set the warm idle to 7-800 RPM. With my 63 SC I simply moved to California where the temperature was clement.

Here is a very good tune up document by a Master

https://www.356carburetorrescue.com/jackstaggs.html

The fact that the car accelerates smoothly but doesn't idle suggests that maybe your idle just needs adjusting but do each step in Jack's guide and your car will thank you

As long as things stay clean the idle mixture screws generally stay put and can be ignored for some years. But possibly somebody has “adjusted” them.
