Coil replacement with the 123 distributor ?

#1 Post by david meyers »

Greetings , Question while I'm waiting for my new 123 ignition to arrive , Have any of ya'll changed/replaced the coil when doing the switch to a 123 unit?
I asked Ed about the need to do that when I was talking to him yesterday ( as I noticed a couple of coils for sale on his website, one a 1.5 ohm and the other 3.0)
he said my car would probably be happier with the 1.5 or less even it's not a 6/8 cylinder , or racer ... I am currently using the standard black Bosch
Haven't measured the one mounted in my car yet but, as I have a spare one , I tested it and got a 1.2 reading ... would ya think mine would be ok/best to use?

thanks in advance for any help/comments..I did a search here and couldn't find any discussion on this subject
PS If it matters I have a 64C /1720/Webers 28 V's ...kinda looking for which trash can here to toss my "problem child" Pertronix ..it's been on/and off problems as discussed here,
so won't go into that again..but when I had my 68 Camaro I restored flatbeded home recently ( after it flamed out )I found the problem was the new Pertronix...ugh

David,
I've been using a 123 distributor for a year and a half now and it's been running fine with my classic old Bosch coil. I've heard anecdotally of other who have had the same experience.

I ordered a new coil with my 123 and it promptly failed so I went back to the old one and it works fine.

If you have a 6 volt car and it fails to run while you are on the road...where are you going to find a coil...tractor supply? Put a new coil on the car and new ignition wires that are properly made. The 123 distributor sell well and it is less expensive than rebuilding your 1965 nearly 60 year old distributor. All the cars that need ignition work (with the distributor) receive a new 123 distributor. We restock every 6 weeks. al
This picture shows how our alternator kit fits in the engine compartment. If you are using a full flow oil filter on or from the pump you do not need the bypass filter the factory installed. It looks clean.
