Warm up

I believe I read in the owner's manual (or maybe somewhere else) that one should take it easy with the car until fully warmed up, at least until the needle is out of the lower green zone on a C. The middle of the gauge is 100C or 212F, boiling point of water. This AM, temps about 45F outside, my ride is 3 miles to the freeway. It is then 10 miles to the office. The needle hadn't even lifted when I got to the freeway, was just coming up after about 5 miles on the freeway and finally just got out of the green zone when I arrived. At that rate I'd be halfway to Iowa before I hit the middle zone! I have a new gauge and sending unit from N. Hollywood as the old one was bouncing all over the place. On an 80F degree day on the freeway, I have gotten the new gauge to the middle area.

My question. Regardless of what the temp gauge reads, do I drive gently (3k rpm or less) for the first 3 or so miles and then drive as I always would?

Hi John,
Mine is the same. When the temps get cool I just run it easy for the
first few miles until it is at least off the bottom of the gauge then
progressively use more throttle and rpm as it warms. It does seem to
need more load to get warm this time of year. I always wait until it's
in the middle range before using wide open throttle to redline though.
Going on the Spiegel rally on Sunday?

It should heat up quicker than that, is the thermostat and flaps working ok?

Perfectly. My carb warmers are open until 90F, in fact open when I arrived at work. Heater flaps close completely, instant heat in the car right out of the gate. Where do you live Michael?

I've gotten a lot of responses off line. Most are in line with my experience. My conclusion is, it stands to reason they run cool in cool conditions. They we're built to stay cool enough in the hottest of conditions and demands so in a cool setting it'd be hard to warm up. Can't control it like with water and a thermostat. So, for the first 5 minutes or so, 2-3500 rpm, no lugging under 2k, and then on to normal driving in a gradual progression.

All,

From time to time customers come in to my shop and at some point comment on how "cool" their cars run , no one ever mentions a hot running car, a walk around back and lifting the engine lid greets you with the smell of almost molten aluminum ,super hot oil and baked paint. Why? After a minimum of 43 (yeah, yeah 42 if you count the Dutch police cars) years of use, engine swaps, sender replacements, bad grounds, crappy wiring, instrument swaps and general malaise-the reading on your gauge is probably not very accurate. Obtain a dip stick temp. sender-that number should correlate with your gauge-if not your gauge is not reading correctly.
