Sunroof Transmission Part needed

#1 Post by Larry Brooks »

A friend of mine just contacted me looking for what he thinks is a slotted washer of some type for his 356 sunroof drive. My 59 has a completely different design for it's electric sunroof and I'm not acquainted with the internal components of the electric sunroof in later models. I have a 65 SR, but I've never had the sunroof apart.

The sunroof was working off and on and it looks like the clutch has been slipping for sometime to me.

Any one know what he needs here?

Anyone have an extra one or a complete sunroof transmission?

I think you are missing the adjust shims in that gear box. The shim part number is http://www.stoddard.com/911-564-643-00.html . The shims are all the same for all the Golde sun roofs.

There is a discussion of sun roof maintenance in Service Bulletin F 1/66 abroad, titled Repair Instructions for the Golde Sliding Roof, model 56 . The model 56 reference is the Golde model, not a 356A. An added shim tightens up the adjustment of the clutch.

I believe the slot pictured in your initial quest is not intended for a washer but rather that slot (although yours is a bit worn) is exposed when assembled from under the transmission box to provide a means to manually drive the sunroof closed (or open) with the special Golde tool.

Thanks Brad and Steve.

Both of you said exactly what I told my friend might be going on. I don't know that particular design, but it looked similar to the slot that the handle screws onto to crank the roof manually on early 911/912 sunroofs. And judging from the wear on the clutch surfaces I assumed there was a shim or something that was missing or too thin. But I wasn't sure if there were shims or some other way to adjust the tension. I think he ordered a couple shims and hopefully will have the car ready in time for his customer to bring it to the WCH.

Hi Larry

I bought a spare at Hershey a few years ago and no longer have the car.

Give me a call if you need a complete unit.

I know this is an old thread but, where can I find a sunroof transmission for a 1964 electric sunroof?

I need the rails and the aluminum (look to be aluminum) pieces that go into the sunroof. I stole these from John's primer on sunroofs. Pics of the parts I'm looking below.

Okay, I've spent a while now searching for the parts in the pix above and, they simply don't make them any more. No surprise there. Looked a the Samba, eBay, etc...nada. I have a few shops that do metal fabrication and could likely reproduce the sunroof parts I'm searching for. Where can I find someone who is restoring their 356C sunroof who would loan out their parts, (I'd be happy to pay a deposit in case the shop wrecks them), or someone who simply has the parts laying around who would allow my fabricator to replicate them? If it works, I could turn out a few dozen sets for those who are undergoing restorations or have simply worn out their parts. Thoughts?

Place an ad in our classified searching for electric sunroof parts to buy outright. You may have to buy an entire clip just to get the bits. Their so rare tha no one is going to risk lending parts only to have the damaged or lost.
Good luck

When I first got my '64, a 356 mechanic I know, who gave my tub a look over, told me not to use my sunroof any more than I had to. It works, but in the 13 years of ownership, I've lived in fear of it breaking on me.

I do tend to help it opening and closing using some slight index finger pressure to 'help it' along.
