Keep in mind that the late 356 pump isn't far off SBC-size with, say 1/3 the bearing area to lube. I'm guessing that it was increased to that size to provide decent engine life with that sad excuse for a filter the factory provided.
Anyhow, I tried the opposite; weaker springs in both the case bypass and the internal bypass in the Pre Mat part; nothing there. There was real concern that stiffening the case bypass spring would blow the cooler apart.
I still think that leaving the springs as-is, giving it good filtration and shortening the gears by 1/3 would show a measurable power gain, but it's a pretty pricy test and an expensive way to find power.
