He is the author of probably the best guide on restoration of these horns. I found I had made one misinterpretation in one of his diagrams, which showed the sequence of parts in the capacitor carrier. I rectified that and now have the horn working with the modern capacitor.

I have also gone down the rabbit hole that is the innards of the Bosch 6V horn. I was thrilled to see the diagram of the capacitor carrier, but then crestfallen to see the update that Merv made a change and the posted diagram is incorrect. Does anyone have the correct parts sequence? Merv if you are “listening” would love Mr. Temple’s guide as well!! Thanks.

Here is how I assembled the contact assembly. What a bugger that one is. Still no joy. Thanks to Julian for a few helpful pointers on the phone today!!

After seeing that I received the presentation from Mervyn some years ago, I searched and found it in my files. I'm going to post it as I can't believe the creator (is it Mark Temple or am I reading the above posts incorrectly?) of the resource will mind. If he does, I'll remove it.
It is a very good description of the horn overhaul procedure.

I’m still trying to get this horn to work. I added a 100 micro farad 10V capacitor into the circuit as suggested by Merv. I’m trying to keep the round film capacitor in the mix because it is the right size to make the contacts work, but man what a FUSS to get to stay together.

I also don’t like the way the contact points are coming together. The top contact is coming in at an angle and the points are barely touching. I think another washer may be required to flatten the angle and make better contact. I did learn from another member that the contacts are normally closed.

Life would be much simpler if I just had Julian fix this darn thing!! Now it’s the challenge. I don’t want to be defeated by a silly electro magnetic device!!!

I had a nice visit today with fellow Registry member, Martin Benade, who stopped by in his 1962 Ruby Red 356 Cab. After a look around the shop we poked around my problem horn for a bit. Although we’re not there yet Martin made a key change in the sequence of insulating washers, spring arms, hoop and contact. As Merv mentions above there seems to be an error in the hoop schematic. The top of the hoop and the longer spring steel arm are in contact. The bottom part of hoop and the lower point plate are in contact. This sequence also improves the alignment and points contact. I think this picture will show you what I’m talking about.

Martin was able to get the horn to sound, but before we could tune it we literally smoked the 10V 100 micro farad capacitor that I introduced to the circuit. The car is 6V. A big shout out to Martin who lent his Porsche experience and automotive electrics skill to help with this vexing issue. You all would have laughed if you could have seen us with our COVID masks, double teaming assembly of the contact bridge with tweezers and locking forceps.

Luckily we each have 3 foot long arms so we remained 6’ apart at all times.

Hi Mike, The top points need to be flip over. There is a step down on the back half of the points that the right side cap spring fit in to . That will also help to get the points straighter.
