Matched date stamped wheels definition
Hello all,
What, in your minds, defines a set of "date matched" wheels? The Lemmerz wheels on my Roadster are original to the car. Three of them are stamped 1/60 and two are stamped 12/59. According to my COA, the car rolled off the line March 23, 1960. I know the wheels are original to the car because my dad was the original owner. I am thinking that they just grabbed whatever was on the rack at the wheel installation time. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance--

Re: Matched date stamped wheels definition
Back in the day, the factory was only interested in providing 5 wheels with the car and that they appear to be similar, i.e. painted, chrome, same size, etc. I doubt they cared at all about the manufacture date code. As long as the date on the wheel does not fall after the car's assembly date, you could consider them to be "matched". Of course, there's a limit to just how long before the car's manufacture date one would go and still call them matching, but that time would only comprise an opinion.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Jon, the original 4 rims on my car are the same date, 3/63, but the build date was 5/63. If I recall, there was no spare. I bought one from Rolly Resos but later found another 3/63 rim to complete the set.
I agree with Wes and I think common opinion is that rims within 3 months of the build date are acceptable.

Well, then I hope the 12/59 wheels were made in late December...Mike Wilson wrote: ↑Sat Dec 05, 2020 1:54 pm Jon, the original 4 rims on my car are the same date, 3/63, but the build date was 5/63. Re: Matched date stamped wheels definition
I've talked to dozens of original owners as well as had several original owner cars in the shop so I can say that yes there are mixed months on cars. I've found however that people don't like this and want all the wheels to be the same month. I've also observed about a 90 day window prior to your build date for the wheels to be correct. I've never seen mixed makers on a car though, so it's either KPZ, Lemmerz, or Sudrad.

Have you seen that the shape of the vent holes don’t look exactly the same from the different manufactures? I have one that looks different.

OK, I know certain "matching numbers" are sacrosanct (engine, tranny, body panels). I actually think it's kind of cool quirk. My Feb. 1964 build coupe has 5 matching 12/63 Lemmerz wheels FWIW. Factory ordered chrome units.Doug McDonnell wrote: ↑Sat Dec 05, 2020 3:30 pm John I helped sell my friends 60 Roadster after he died. 2 rims 12/59 and 2 rims 1/60
Thanks for the inputs...

Re: Matched date stamped wheels definition
From what I’ve read and spoken to some very knowledgeable people, the wheel dates are normally 2 to 3 before the production date of the 356. The wheels could also mixed and not the same months like yours.
